Russell Thomas, MPH

Background:

Russell Thomas, MPH, is a Yale-trained public health professional with nearly a decade of experience in infectious disease epidemiology and diagnostics. While completing pre-medical coursework at the University of California, Davis, Russell pursued dual degrees in American Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, focusing on community-based health and the intersections of gender, politics, and activism. This interdisciplinary foundation enabled Russell to work extensively with underserved communities, including LGBTQ+ populations, people who use drugs (PWUD), sex workers, and individuals experiencing homelessness, to advance population-level health initiatives.

Russell began contributing to the COVID-19 response immediately after undergraduate studies. As a leader within a nonprofit organization providing childcare services to over 150 children, Russell designed and implemented a comprehensive COVID-19 surveillance testing system to ensure uninterrupted, in-person operations. Serving as Program Director, Russell oversaw the weekly testing of more than 300 individuals, refined operational protocols, and marketed the program to external organizations, generating over $80,000 in revenue. This pivotal experience inspired Russell to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) in the Epidemiology of Microbial Disease.

Accepted into prestigious programs at institutions including CUNY, Rutgers, George Washington University, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, and Yale, Russell chose to attend the Yale School of Public Health. At Yale, Russell worked with Dr. Anne Wyllie and SalivaDirect, Inc., gaining expertise in infectious disease epidemiology, diagnostic technologies, and business development. Russell played an integral role in supporting SalivaDirect, Inc.'s transition from an academic initiative to an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, contributing to its strategic growth and operational success.

Today, Russell is a Senior Business Development Associate at SalivaDirect, Inc., where they continue to make strides in infectious disease diagnostics. Through R0, Russell provides independent consulting services to nonprofits, small businesses, research groups, and startups, leveraging their unique blend of scientific expertise, public health experience, and business acumen to drive impactful health solutions.
